HAVING MORE THAN ONE VEHICLE IN A HOUSEHOLD CAUSES MANY PROBLEMS
(credit: www.yorkpress.co.uk)
In this era, we can see that everything moves so quickly especially
in big cities. Everyone has their own busy life. They have a lot to do. Move
from one place to another place. It makes many people think to have their own
private vehicles since it will make them easier to go everywhere they want. So,
it is normal to see more than one vehicle in a household. But, as we know that
human population is always increasing. If everyone has the same thought to own
a private vehicle, it will contribute to the increase in number of vehicles. In
addition, there will be many other things that can be affected. That is why I
agree that having more than one vehicle in a household causes many problems.
There are three bad impacts caused by the great number of vehicles
in a household. First, the great number of vehicles on the road is one of major
causes of traffic congestion. The more vehicles means the more traffic
congestions happen. As we know, the growth of the number of vehicles exceeds
the growth of the number of roads so it can cause traffic congestion. Second,
the more vehicle, the more air pollution. Air pollution contributed to the
deaths of 6.1 million people in 2016 according to Forbes. The increase in dirty
air causes various health problems. Third, most people who are having more than
one car do not have adequate garages. They can only accommodate one car in
their garages while the other is parked in front of their houses which makes
the public path in neighborhood narrower and makes some vehicles difficult to
get through the path.
On the other hand, there are also many reasons which make people
choose to own a private vehicle compared to use public transport. First, they
want to save time. As we know, everyone has to go somewhere at the same time.
For example, everyone goes to work or to school at 7 AM. It makes these hours
very prone to jam. Therefore some people choose to own a private vehicle,
because it will make them easier to avoid congestion. But, if everyone decides
not to use private vehicle, I believe there will be no traffic jam so everyone
can reach their destinations on time. Second, using private vehicle is
considered more efficient. For example, if we use angkot, we can spend
up to Rp20,000 per day. Meanwhile, when we compared it to the private vehicle,
such as motorcycle, we only spend up to Rp20,000 per week. In 2014, Bandung
city government has implemented a free school bus policy for students so they
can use it without spending much money. Every city government in Indonesia must
follow this policy because it can reduce the number of private vehicle. Third,
many people are not feeling comfortable to use public transportation. As we
know that public transportation in Indonesia is not adequate yet compared to
public transportation in developed countries. Both in terms of facilities and
cleanliness. But, this problem can be solved since the government is working on
MRT and LRT project. These transportations have high-quality services. So it
must be comfortable for passengers. In addition, I believe that if people
prefer to use public transport, the government will focus on the improvement in
public transportation.
Having more than
one vehicle in a household could be a problem especially when it harms others.
That is why this issue is very important. The government should have adequate
policies on private vehicle ownership in order to limit the number of vehicles.
Besides, they also need to make some improvements in public transport
infrastructure so that people will feel more comfortable to use public
transportation. It can be a solution to reduce the number of vehicles on the
roads.
